Tips On Building Your Bankroll Playing Cash Games
There is no doubt that the face of poker has changed significantly over the past twenty years, with the internet clearly being a major factor behind such change. When I started playing cash games it was a completely different world. For example No Limit games just weren’t spread, and the only times I’d have the chance to play No Limit was in tournaments. However, the general philosophy behind building a bankroll has never changed.
Base Your Time Around Hours Not Results
The longevity of my play was based on hours and not results. I would show up at noon and play until 8pm, regardless of how I was doing. What that does is it teaches you the discipline of not chasing your losses and not hitting and running. Those are two of the biggest mistakes I see those trying to build bankrolls doing. You shouldn’t be like those who take small wins and then suddenly run out of the door, but when they’re struggling, stay gambling for hours on end.
Work Hard
The main thing you need to do to build a bankroll is work hard, it’s as simple as that. Figure out how much you’re making at an hourly rate and then decide how much money you want to make a week. You should then work as many hours as needed to reach your weekly target and stick to this.
Techniques Depend On The Type Of Poker Player You Are
The methods you use to build a bankroll through cash games heavily depend on the type of poker player you are. For example, the bankroll choices I made are not what I’d advise you to do as I was a lot more of a risk taker than most people are. I was playing 10/20 if I had £1200 to my name, or even if I had £400. This was because I had borrowing power, so if I went broke, I could borrow a few pounds here and there.
Not everybody would be able to do this however and I would not advise it. Particularly in this day and age, it’s so much easier to build a bankroll. I had a very limited amount of games to choose from. You however can go to websites such as Golden Palace Monopoly online and play as small as you want, you can multi-table and build a bankroll very quickly through such ways.
It’s Not About The Money
When you’re learning how to build a bankroll through playing cash games, you must hold a mentality that it isn’t about the money. What is most important is that you learn. Adopting this mindset, will teach you a lot about playing poker to make the right decisions and not worrying about the money so much.
